Who The Hell Is Bruce Logan?

Meet Bruce

Well, you can check me out on IMDB.

I suppose my biggest claim to fame is… I blew up the Death Star.
That’s right, Bruce Logan – not Luke Skywalker.

“Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope” (1977, directed by George Lucas)

“Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” (1977, directed by George Lucas)

Beyond “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” (1977, directed by George Lucas), I did VFX on “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968) for Academy Award-Winning Director Stanley Kubrick and got my first feature screen credit as a teenager.

“Tron” (1982, directed by Steven Lisberger)

“Tron” (1982, directed by Steven Lisberger)

I also shot “Tron” (1982, directed by Steven Lisberger) for Disney. And the opening of “Star Trek, the Motion Picture” (1979, directed by Robert Wise) for Paramount.

Do you recognize the above clip? There’s a fascinating story about how I worked on this shot twenty years before “Blade Runner” (1982, directed by Ridley Scott) came out…stay tuned for a future blog post on that!

I directed 2nd Unit on “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (1998) for director Terry Gilliam. I’ve also been a commercial Director/Cameraman with about 300 spots to my credit including several Super Bowl spots. I’ve done music videos for Madonna, Prince, and Rod Stewart.

And much, much more!

Zacuto Collaboration

A couple of years ago, I hooked up with Zacuto, administrating their invaluable test: “The Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012.”

In talking with Zacuto principles, Steve Weiss and Jens Bogehegn and with a strong desire to impart some of my experiences in this great business, they suggested that I do a blog on the Zacuto website. So here we are.

Get Inside Bruce’s Brain

I want this blog to be more of a stream of consciousness.  I want to tell you what it’s like to be a Hollywood hyphenate in the third millennium.

Yes, I’ll talk about technical conundrums, about cameras and equipment, about lighting like the great Renaissance painters. But I’ll also talk about the Hollywood insider meetings that I attend.

I’ll tell you about the Star Wars fan film I am shooting.

I’ll give you an inside look at the A.S.C. clubhouse… what we’re discussing at the Technical Committee meetings, like HDR and Laser Projection. For instance, I just saw a preview screening of “Furious Seven” (2015, directed by James Wan) at the Mann’s Chinese Imax Laser Theater… amazing stuff.  Not so much the film… but the Laser Projector and the Dolby Atmos.

I’ll give you historical accounts and fun stories of all the landmark films that I have worked on.

“2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968 directed by Stanley Kubrick)

“2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968 directed by Stanley Kubrick)

I’ll tell you what it was like to sit in “rushes” with Stanley Kubrick for two and a half years defending my work.

I’ll tell you what it was like working with two time Oscar winner John Huston as he directed “Prizzi’s Honor” (1985) from a wheelchair wearing an oxygen mask.

I’ll tell you how I shrank Lily Tomlin in Universal’s “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” (1981), directed by Joel Schumacher, without using any conventional VFX.

I’ll talk about my current projects, whether it’s directing a low budget feature in New Mexico, attending a Comic Con in Wisconsin, or coloring a feature film in Resolve 12.

I can only write what’s in my heart, but I’m very open to feedback from you as to what you would like me to focus on.

What To Expect From Bruce’s Blog

“Tron” (1982, directed by Steven Lisberger)

“Tron” (1982, directed by Steven Lisberger)

I’m going to give you a lot of tips about the way I approach the challenges I have encountered on my journey. However, I’m not going to be giving specific “How to” seminars as those can be found in much more detail elsewhere.

I will be giving detailed teaching events in other venues, such as Web Seminars and Live Hands On Master Classes. I will keep you informed about any upcoming teaching events.

I want this to be a very interactive forum… and I’d love to answer some of your questions, so feel free to chat with us on Zacuto’s social media platforms (see below) or comment on the blog.

So here we go! I hope you’ll join me on this new adventure, and may the force be with you.

Bruce’s first post will be about shooting on greenscreen, come back later this month to read all about it!
